There is an old legend about the origin of the Brezel… the Swabian Pretzel Saga.

Frieder, a baker who lived in Bad Urach in Swabia, was to be executed.

His employer, Count Eberhard im Barte, knew that if he had Frieder hanged, he would also have to manage without his delicious pastries. So he had Frieder brought to the lower castle and said: “Because I appreciate your baking skills, I will give you another chance. If within three days you invent a cake or bread through which the sun shines three times, and which tastes better to me than anything I know, then you shall be free!”

Frieder immediately set to work. But two days passed without the baker coming up with anything great.

On the third and last day, he kneaded a lightly salted yeast dough, the count was not much for sweets, and by making a shape resembling his wife’s folded arms formed three openings, which the sun really could shine through.

Thanks to the cat these fell into a bucket of hot lye, which the baker’s wife had previously mixed and left here. She wanted to season fish and soup with it.

The baker and his wife panicked, tried to get all the pieces back into the right shape, quickly sprinkled a few grains of coarse salt on top to decorate, put them in the oven and nervously waited for them to finish baking.

When Frieder took out his pastries he was amazed.

The ones with the lye were deliciously brown and brightly cracked in the middle. The little arms were crispy, the middle soft like a bun.

He hurried as fast as he could to the Count with the oven-warm pastries, and who was pleased indeed.

He consulted with his wife, Princess Barbara, as to what they should be called.

It is true, they did seem to have arms, and the princess remembered the Latin for little arms, bracchia, and also thought of the word brazula, which means two intertwined hands.

Call the pastry Brazel,” said the Count, adding: “And tomorrow I’m expecting a whole basket full of Brazel for vespers in the castle.

And that is how Brezel came about… 😊

The Italians say a monk of theirs invented them, the Swiss say it was a tradition used for wedding couples, there are more German stories…who knows? Does it really matter? Just enjoy them!

There’s also variants: with butter. With butter & chives (my favorite). Pizza pretzel. And in Bavaria we call them Brezn.

VUCA. Agile. Flexibel. Change. Crisis. Sounds familiar? The world is changing. Our work life is changing. It’s so easy. Just be like Pipi!

Was hat die heutige Arbeitswelt mit Pippi Langstrumpf zu tun? Auf den ersten Blick: rein gar nichts. Aber der Reihe nach, beginnen wir mit den USA der 90er Jahre.

Eiserner Vorhang fällt: Welcome VUCA

Das Ende des Kalten Kriegs Mitte der 1990er Jahre war die Geburtsstunde des amerikanischen Akronyms VUCA. Angesichts des heruntergerissenen eisernen Vorhangs sah sich das amerikanische Militär plötzlich nicht mehr einem Feind, sondern einer multilateralen Welt gegenüber. Diese wollte Frieden und Abrüstung, ein völlig ungewohnter Zustand für die Truppe! VUKA schwappte schließlich über den großen Teich zu uns nach Europa und steht im Deutschen für VOLATILITÄT, UNGEWISSHEIT, KOMPLEXITÄT und AMBIGUITÄT.

Die Welt war doch immer schon „VUCA“

Der Mensch lebte schon immer in einer unsicheren Welt – denken wir an Säbelzahntiger, Pest, Kreuzzüge, Weltkriege, Weltwirtschaftskrisen usw.? Gegenwärtig setzen wir uns auseinander mit Robotern, die durch Künstliche Intelligenz uns Menschen (bedrohlich) ähnlich werden. Es ist eine Welt ohne die uns vertraute Ordnung und Stabilität; eine, die für viele „gefühlt aus den Fugen geraten“ ist. Die Menge und das Tempo an neuen Produkten, Möglichkeiten und Informationen steigen. Über Facebook, Twitter & Co. werden Meinungen in Sekundenschnelle weltweit verbreitet. Sind es Tatsachen oder fake news? Wir sind verunsichert. Halt und Vertrauen in die „Institutionen“ gehen verloren. Früher war auch nicht alles stabil, sicher, einfach und eindeutig, allerdings befinden wir uns heute mehr denn je inmitten einer VUCA-Welt.

Warum sich ein Vergleich mit Pippi Langstrumpf lohnt

Wie schaffen wir es, bei diesem nahezu apokalyptischen Zustand weder völlig kopflos herumzuirren, uns willenlos dem Geschehen zu ergeben oder uns von einer Klippe herabzustürzen? Wie können wir unseren Alltag trotzdem bewältigen? Und zwar so, dass wir gut und gerne im Hier und Jetzt leben und auch hoffnungsvoll nach vorne schauen? Hier hilft uns Pippi Langstrumpf. Wer kennt es nicht, das 9-jährige Mädchen mit Sommersprossen, roten Zöpfen und Ringelstrümpfen? Mit viel Witz, Quatsch im Kopf und Anderssein sorgt Pippi für Chaos in dem bis dato geordnet ablaufenden Dorfleben. Mit Konventionen hat sie nichts am Hut, pfeift auf Autoritäten und schafft sich ihre eigene VUCA-Welt, in der sie mit jeder Menge Spaß und Begeisterung lebt. Das können wir auch…

VUKA – was steckt hinter den 4 Buchstaben?

Mit Volatilität ist Schwankung gemeint. Bezogen auf unseren Joballtag sind es plötzlich veränderte Situationen, mit denen wir uns arrangieren müssen: Flugzeuge fallen aus technischen Gründen aus und es gibt keine Ersatzmaschinen, so dass Passagiere am Flughafen stranden anstatt ihr eigentliches Ziel zu erreichen. In solchen Situationen versuchen wir uns mit den unerwarteten Änderungen zu arrangieren. Auf routinierte Abläufe, Prozesse und Zustände „wie schon immer“ können wir uns in der heutigen Arbeitswelt nicht mehr verlassen.

In Pippis Welt gibt es keine routinierten Abläufe – sie stellt alles „Normale“ auf den Kopf: Sie geht nicht zur Schule, schläft mit dem Kopf am Fußende und sitzt auf ihrem Pferd falsch herum. Brenzlige Situationen lässt Pippi auf sich zukommen und macht sich nicht vorher schon verrückt. Mit spielerischer Leichtigkeit nimmt sie die Welt an, wie sie ist. Sie behält ihren unerschütterlichen Humor und lässt sich ihre gute Laune selten vermiesen. Getreu dem Motto „ich mache mir die Welt, wie sie mir gefällt“ gelingt es ihr, mit einem Lachen im Gesicht unangenehme Situationen zu meistern. Wenn wir von dieser Einstellung nur ein wenig abschauen und umsetzen, machen wir es uns im Alltag viel leichter.

Der zweite Buchstabe in VUCA steht für Unsicherheit. Im Gegensatz zu vergangenen Zeiten kommt heute die Informationsvielfalt hinzu. Sie beschert uns aber weder mehr Sicherheit noch Gewissheit. Verlässlich ist nur, dass wir durch die Nutzung neuer Medien einfach mehr schneller erfahren und dadurch in geistige Habachtstellung geraten. Auch die beste Strategie hilft uns dabei „mit Sicherheit“ nicht weiter.

Auch die physischen Superkräfte von „Königin Ephraims Tochter Langstrumpf“ werden wir leider nicht bekommen; von Neurowissenschaftlern und Sportlern wissen wir jedoch, dass wir uns gerade mit mentaler Stärke zu Höchstleistungen pushen können. Wir können dann erfolgreich sein, wenn wir an neue Lösungen glauben und uns nicht mit Selbstzweifeln innerlich lähmen. Niemals stellt Pippi sich oder ihre Möglichkeiten fundamental in Frage! Glauben wir an unsere Fähigkeiten, zu improvisieren, kreativ zu sein und jede noch so unvorhergesehene Situation in Pippi-Langstrumpf-Manier meistern zu können.

Komplexität beschreibt die dritte Eigenschaft bei VUCA. Allein die Informationsdichte macht das Leben heute vielschichtiger; alles ist miteinander vernetzt. Globaler Handel und grenzenlose Mobilität versetzen uns in eine komplexe Welt. Nicht immer löst eine einzige Ursache ein Problem aus; oft sind auch Wirkung und Ursache vermischt. Zum Beispiel reicht es bei der Personalsuche heute nicht mehr aus, eine einzige Stellenanzeige in der lokalen Presse zu schalten. Geeignete Kandidat*innen heute zu finden ist komplex, abhängig von zig Faktoren und erfordert kreative und neue Recruiting-Strategien.

Pippi tritt ähnlich komplexen Situationen mutig und kühn entgegen! Sie durchbricht Normen mit unbändiger Furchtlosigkeit. Auch wir können komplexe Situationen offen annehmen anstatt sie zu ignorieren. Warum trauen wir uns nicht öfter zu, neue verrückte Wege wie Pippi mutig zu gehen anstatt ausgetretenen Pfaden stur zu folgen? So ermöglichen wir uns, Neues zu lernen und Unbekanntes zu entdecken. Nach dem Motto: no risk, no fun!

Unter Ambiguität verstehen wir Doppel- oder Mehrdeutigkeit. Auf den Arbeitskontext übertragen, kann man beispielsweise nicht eindeutig klären, warum ein Projekt nicht erfolgreich verläuft: Liegt es an der Kommunikation, den Akteuren oder am Kunden? An zeitlichen oder personellen Ressourcen oder beidem? Abhängig von den Rollen gibt es verschiedene Sichtweisen, die jede für sich zutreffend sein kann.

Auch hier lohnt sich der Blick auf Pippi Langstrumpf: Sie lebt ohne Eltern, nur mit „Herrn Nilsson“ und „Großer Onkel“. Finanziell ist Pippi dank der Goldschätze ihres Vaters völlig unabhängig. Das was Pippi aber innerlich auszeichnet, ist ihre mentale Unabhängigkeit. Sie begegnet anderen unvoreingenommen. Losgelöst von der finanziellen Situation zeigt uns Pippi, dass wir autonom sein können, indem wir Haltung zeigen und zu unserer Meinung stehen. Einfache Erklärungen sind passé und wir benötigen eine differenziert geführte Kommunikation ohne vorschnelle Urteile. Das ist nicht immer einfach und erfordert neben guten Argumenten vor allem ein stabiles Rückgrat. Manchmal ist es sinnvoll, über den Dingen zu stehen und sich von anderen abzugrenzen. Das macht uns mental frei, innerlich unabhängig und bereit für neue Wege.

FAZIT: Holen Sie die Pippi Langstrumpf aus sich heraus!

Die Welt ist heute wie sie ist und wird sich auch morgen ändern – VUCA ist der heutige Zustand, den wir schlichtweg akzeptieren müssen. Beeinflussen können wir lediglich unsere Einstellung, wie wir mit und in ihr agieren. Nutzen wir die Chance, souverän zu handeln, anders sein zu dürfen und uns unter veränderten Rahmenbedingungen weiterzuentwickeln! Mit Pippis Worten: “Warum ich rückwärts gegangen bin?” sagte Pippi. “Leben wir etwa nicht in einem freien Land? Darf man nicht gehen, wie man will?”

This trip was planned with plenty of delicious inputs from our dear Portuguese friends. Thanks! Why the north? The home of our friends and a restaurant recommendation with a surprise menu (yeah!!!) from other friends.

We arrived in the city which passed the name to the country and its wine: Porto in Portugal. Even the hotel check-in starts with 2 glasses of Port wine! Already the English Gentlemen back in 1800 knew about the Port wine. Also fantastic: Port Tonic. Not sure how many we enjoyed – a new old favorite drink.

A morning (later evening) stroll up & down the steep streets of Porto. Little markets. Palm trees. A surprise dinner. Sea gulls. A coffee in a lush urban garden. Tapas. Fresh fish. Seafood. Sunshine. Little sunburn in our faces. T-Shirts and no coats. Sunglasses. Plenty of glasses of wine. And port tonics. City vibes.

Porto is famous for its production of Port wine, which is matured in the vast cellars that stretch along the banks of the mighty Douro River.

Leaving fantastic Porto and cruising along the Rota do Vinho do Porto – it’s beautiful.

Next stop: the vineyards. Of course!

Surrounded by orange & lemon trees, vineyards, olive trees and cherry blossom.

Leaving our little paradise & moving on to the place with the biggest waves breaking: Nazare, the Mount Everest for surfing. So big. So dangerous. So idealized.

No matter where you are in Portugal, you are always close to the ocean. And I loved the 80s music everywhere. Yeah!

What’s the expectation to a country we both haven’t been to? Well, it’s even more beautiful & delicious than we ever thought. Portugal is vibrant, colorful, energetic. I think we may have found a new favorite travel destination. Loving it.

Our suitcase is filled with olive oil, red wine, (which burst in my suitcase and plenty of clothes are ruined…), sardines, port wine, lemons and so much more…

The Carl Benz-Motorwagen patent issued in 1886 was the first practical motor car patent granted of its kind. What you might not know is that it was Carl’s wife, Bertha, who taught the world the practical way to use a car on her cross-country trek with her sons Eugene and Richard from Mannheim to Pforzheim in August 1888. You may also not know that it was her dowry that funded Carl’s development of that 1st patent.

The trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim is pretty famous. It was very long, with several stops at pharmacies for petroleum. Stuck wheels in mud. But imagine the press next day: “It would have been much easier to use a horse cart. There is no infrastructure (gas stations or smooth roads) for Automobiles. It will take years and millions until people will adapt to Automobiles”. Sounds very similar to today’s EV adaptation.

She’s a role model ignoring the #reichweitenangst (fear of lack of range), which is dominating the discussion about electric cars today. Let’s be more like Bertha!

Bertha was born in 1849 in Pforzheim, Germany. She met Karl and as an independent woman, invested her own personal funds into his business before they were even married. He later used this money to fund his ‘horseless carriage’ project which became the ‘Benz Patent-Motorwagon’.

The car broke down 3 times. Each time she fixed it herself using her shoe laces and hosiery. Super cool lady.

She also helped to improve the product. On the way to her mother, she asked a local tailor to attach lether pads to the brakes. After she returned, she explained her experience on slopes and Carl added additional gear to the vehicle. She actually can be considered a very first automotive test engineer 🙂

February 2023 & temperatures above 0 C degrees…. And so the garden season begins.

It’s about time. I missed it. Working in the garden makes me happy. We started composting 2 years ago… and voila, filling up our garden with composted soil.

Looking forward to all the beautiful spring surprises… some of our bulbs are coming up…

What is love?

[uncountable] a very strong feeling of liking and caring for somebody/something, especially a member of your family or a friend… according to the Oxford dictionary.

Maybe, love is all the small little things in daily life which stick us like glue together and create long happy relationships…

No matter, where we sleep, I get to choose the side of the bed furthest away from the door. Why? If we get robbed I don’t want to be too close (they can have hubby first. Lol).

I’m an early bird, I walk the dog, while hubby, the owl, can stay longer in bed.

He brings me a cappuccino to my home office desk. Every day, since he started to walk again after the accident. (it’s my job on weekends).

My favorite hobby and what I’m really good at: planning. Planning meals, travels, weekends, appointments… hubby loves to cook and travel with me.

It’s the Carnival season – not only in Brazil but also in Europe. Carnival is an annual Christian celebration that typically occurs before the onset of Lent and generally involves a public celebration of some kind, e.g. street parties, parades, balls or some other form of entertainment. Lent is a time of fasting and sacrifice, a farewell from all bodily pleasures for forty days before Easter.

Venice Carnival is one of the oldest carnivals in the world, back in 1094.

By the 18th century the Venice Carnival reached its maximum splendor. It was a celebration that knew no bounds. Carnival had also gained international recognition and attracted visitors from all over Europe. Venice was the pleasure playground of Europe including gambling, essentially the Las Vegas of its day.

Venetians unabashedly took part in lots of debauchery and revelry during carnival. They were able to get away with a lot of things, because their identity and sins were concealed behind their masks.

When Napoleon and his troops invaded Venice in 1797 carnival was banned. This ban lasted over 200 years. In 1979 Venice Carnival quickly returned to its glory days as it is now one of the most famous and popular carnivals in the world.

Well, we enjoyed the Venice vibes in Germany & admired the extravagant costumes and masks. Stunning!

Wow! Spectacular! What a great event with stunning costumes, beautiful scenery, blue sky & sunshine.

And the best part… anyone can participate. All you need is someone who can create an amazing costume… 1 year to go…

Another business trip to Romania. This time no major flight delay. Arriving on a Monday afternoon at day light.

The hotel receptionist greeting me like a good old friend (no idea what I did to be remembered from the last trip 3 months ago, lol). This time much colder -14C degrees, snow & ice but the hotel heat worked and we had hot water for the full 4 days (I was prepared with a hot water bottle – not needed).

Freezing outside, sweating inside (seems only the German heat is turned down).

Back with my favorite work colleagues in our plant and development center. Back with the crazy taxi drivers (we ended up with a „personal driver“ while skidding along the icey roads listening to 80s pop music – same music taste, is that why I like the country so much?!). Laughing about my German colleague who had a bit of a hard time being in Rumania.

Amazing dinners in great company. I’ve seen the most interesting colored hair (turquoise, purple, very blonde, very pink – everything) & matching outfits. Being surrounded by extremely young people, keeping our mind fresh and make us feel old (maybe I should dye my hair, too?).

Yes, a business trip is allowed to be fun. Long work days, short nights and a lot of topics for homework inclusive. I very much enjoyed that again. Sometimes, I love my job. Lol. Got my overdose of people (in a good sense).

January 2023. Almost over. For some of us the first month of retirement is done (result: loves it). Others broke their foot (meh). Others had Covid. For others, me, the month with the most sick days is ending. January was all about hot toddies (fighting that bad flu). And tequila (the only medicine to stop diarrhea). Rest. Sleep. Netflix. Books. Cups of tea. Jars of honey. Hubbies home cooked meals (and now I passed it on to him. Sorry…).

And when I just look out of the window, it starts snowing again. Best to snuggle in and enjoy that fire.

The good thing about winter: it’s just me (you) and my (your) thoughts. No bad feelings for lying on the sofa & reading. Or watching another series. I have been reading 6 (!) books so far this year (have the feeling I may overachieve my resolution for this year (12 books)). It makes me very happy that I found the pleasure and the time for reading again.

The winter, my alibi! No regrets for not leaving the house (and still already looking forward to spring 🌷).
